AGRICULTURE WORKERS ASSOCIATION COOPERATIVE CREDIT UNION DONATES 135 BAGS OF RICE TO IT’S VULNERABLE MEMBERS
The Agriculture workers association cooperative credit union on Sunday the 10th May 2020 donated 135 bags of rice 25kg to it’s members at a ceremony held at the department headquarters, Cape Point , Bakau. The donation targets low paid staff under the Department who are active members of the credit union and the gesture is part of efforts to fight against the global pandemic COVID _19 which has brought about total lock down in activities across the country . Hence the main purpose is to support their vulnerable members to meet their food needs which also coincided with the holy month of Ramadan.
The event was graced by the Director General, Department of Agriculture, board members of AWACCU and few beneficiaries. This is in line with WHO guidelines to observe social distancing among people to prevent the spread of the disease.
Speaking at the event Dr. Lamin Sonko representative of the Director General NARI said before the inception of AWACCU low paid agriculture staff have suffered a lot with no other source to access finance noting that, the gesture is timely in the wake of COVID _19.He pointed out that many could have benefited but was wise of the board to scout for very vulnerable members to benefit from the donation.
He went further to thank the board of AWACCU for constructing a well structured facility for the operation of the union and it’s staff while assuring them of NARI’s commitment to make AWA a strong one.
Mr. Lamin Bajo, Director CEES for his part spoke on the rekindling of the Agriculture Workers Union which has not been functional over the years. He said the union should be revitalised to support the welfare of staff who are benefiting a lot from AWACCU financially.
Abba Sankareh registrar of cooperatives and Director Agribusiness services highlighted the importance of being a member of the credit union noting that AWACCU is the second credit union to demonstrate this goodwill donation to it’s members. He went on to say that, there are 54 vibrant credit unions across the country with a total savings of over 1 billion dalasis. This avail members the opportunity to save and benefit from their various credit unions with loans and other forms of financial benefits.
Dr. Saikou E.Sanyang, Director General, Department of Agriculture in giving his opening statement expressed delight in gracing the handing over of the bags of rice to staff under his purview. He highlighted that COVID-19 is affecting the socio economic movement in all countries which have no control adding that, Agriculture being the driving force in any country is expected to decline in production thereby affecting the food security of many countries due to the pandemic. He seized the opportunity to thank the union for the donation which targets Drivers, Cleaners, Gardeners and the ATIs. He urged staff to take ownership of the union while assuring the board members of his unflinching support any time the need arises.
Mrs. Kaddy Darboe gave the vote of thanks on behalf of beneficiaries who expressed delight and appreciation to AWACCU to what she described as a surprise package which would go a long way in helping them and their families.
