The Agric Sector in the Gambia for decades after her independence has been practiced on a subsistence scale with farmers using local or traditional tools to engage in yearly seasonal farming. Hence the sector still suffers setbacks with the country still relying on imports to meet the demands of its population. The remedy to this could be mechanizing agriculture with the use of modern machines and farming implements to reduce hard labor and drudgery on farmers. The Minister of Agriculture on Friday the 30th June 2017 Presided over the handing over ceremony of 1300 tons of rice at the Banjul sea port.
The occasion was grazed by senior government officials, the Ambassador of China to the Gambia, private sector and NGOs. The first consignment was received by the minister of women’s affairs and overseer of the office of the vice president Fatoumatta Jallow Tambajang on behalf of the Gambia government. The Food Technology services (FTS) of the DOA embarked on a sensitization campaign to selected communities in the North Bank and Central River Regions of the Gambia. The sensitization is part of P2Rs project objectives to eradicate protein malnutrition deficiency among children especially those above 6 months of age. This sensitization took off following a validation of their training manual recently developed by the unit.
